Daily Retreat 05/02/09
2009 May 2 Sat:Athanasius, bp, dr M
Acts 9:31-42/ Ps 115(116):12-13. 14-15. 16-17/ Jn 6:60-69
From today’s readings: “The Church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace.... O LORD, I am Your servant; I am Your servant, the son of Your handmaid.... Do you also want to leave?”
Get Up!
The Acts of the Apostles recounts a number of miraculous cures at the hands of Peter and the other Apostles. In each case, the cure enables the one cured to serve the Church, and the news of the cure attracts interest from non-committed people.
It is Christ who strengthens and empowers His Church with His own Holy Spirit. Sometimes, this means the working of miracles, even in our own days. Other times though, the strength given to members of the Church is for the day-in and day-out faithful living of the Gospel - not as newsworthy, perhaps, but still essential for the spread of the Gospel.
Do you want to serve God more zealously? Instead of directing Him and waiting for Him to empower us in the manner we would like, it’s crucial to be attentive through prayer to the plan of God for serving Him in the way He knows best, and for that purpose, He will strengthen us, empower us, and even cure us if necessary.
