The New Covenant

Today, in the morning, priests gather with their bishop to celebrate the Chrism Mass with the whole people of God in the diocesan cathedral. Recalling that "Christ" means "the Anointed One," the bishop blesses the Oil of Salvation, Oil of the Sick, and the Sacred Chrism, all of which are used in the sacramental continuation of ChristÂ’s mission, and so on this day, all priests also renew their own commitment to continue that mission.

In the evening, the faithful come together in their parish church for the renewed celebration of the Last Supper, when our Lord instituted the sacraments of the Eucharist and of Holy Orders, and gave His example of fraternal charity in service when He humbly washed His apostlesÂ’ feet.

At the end of Mass, the Eucharistic Real Presence of Jesus processes to a shrine of adoration, where all are invited to heed the plea He gave His apostles to join Him in prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. This solemn adoration can continue even until Midnight, at which time it ends, symbolizing the arrest of Jesus.

Our Lord gives us Himself - let us take and eat!
